Can I pair the DS3678-HD directly to a tablet, phone or laptop without the cradle?

Yes. Scan the "HID BT Classic" barcode in Zebra's DS36X8 Product Reference Guide, then pick the scanner from your device's Bluetooth list; it types scanned data like a keyboard. You still need the cradle to charge it. If the scanner drops the tablet connection when docked, scan "Disable Pair on Contacts" so it charges without re-pairing to the cradle.

How many scans does the battery last, and how long does it take to charge?

Zebra rates the PowerPrecision+ 3100 mAh Li-ion battery at 100,000+ scans per full charge. A fully drained battery takes up to 3 hours to charge in the cradle on the included power supply, or up to 10 hours if the cradle is powered only over USB. The battery is user-replaceable, and Zebra's free 123Scan software shows its health and charge cycles.

Can I use it in a freezer or cold storage?

Yes, within limits. The cordless DS3678-HD is rated to operate from -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C) and is IP65/IP68 sealed. Only charge it between 32°F and 104°F (0–40°C), so keep the cradle outside the freezer. Moving between cold and warm areas can fog the scan window.

What happens to my scans if I walk out of Bluetooth range?

Zebra rates the Class 1 Bluetooth range at a minimum of 300 ft (100 m) line of sight in open air; racks and walls shorten it. If you turn on Out of Range Batch Mode, the scanner stores barcodes while disconnected and sends them when it reconnects. It's off by default. Turn on Persistent Batch Storage too, so stored scans survive a power-down.

Can several DS3678 scanners share one cradle?

Yes. The cradle supports Multipoint-to-Point mode, which lets up to seven scanners pair to a single cradle. The first scanner connected must scan the "Multipoint-to-Point" barcode in the Product Reference Guide. Each scanner still needs somewhere to charge, so plan for extra cradles or a battery charger.

What does "FIPS" mean on this kit? Do I need to turn it on?

FIPS 140 is a U.S. government security standard for encryption modules. FIPS-enabled DS3678 scanners and cradles can encrypt all data sent between the scanner and the cradle over Bluetooth. FIPS mode is off by default; turn it on by scanning "Enable FIPS" in the Product Reference Guide. While it's active, the scanner lights an amber LED on every trigger pull.

Will it read very small barcodes, and barcodes on phone screens?

Yes. The HD model is built for small, dense codes: Zebra lists 3 mil Code 128 at 2.0–3.0 in and 10 mil Data Matrix at 1.0–9.0 in, so hold tiny codes close. It isn't a long-range scanner. It also reads codes on screens; if a phone screen reads slowly, scan an "Enhanced" Mobile Phone/Display Mode barcode in the guide.

Can the DS3678-HD connect to an Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLC?

Yes, through Zebra's EA3600 Network Connect adapter (sold separately). Choose the version that matches your PLC: EA3600-R1 models support EtherNet/IP (Rockwell/Allen-Bradley), Modbus TCP and standard TCP/IP; EA3600-S1 models support PROFINET (Siemens), Modbus TCP and standard TCP/IP.
