Does it switch automatically between handheld and stand mode?
Yes. When you set the DS4608 in the included gooseneck Intellistand, a built-in sensor puts it into hands-free mode: it stays on and reads any barcode you present. Pick it up and it returns to trigger mode. When nothing is presented for a while, it drops into low-power mode until it detects motion.
Can it scan QR codes and barcodes on customers' phone screens?
Yes. Zebra says the DS4600 series reads 1D and 2D barcodes printed on labels or displayed on a phone. If phone screens read slowly, scan the "Enhanced in Hand-held Mode" or "Enhanced in Hands-free Mode" barcode in the Product Reference Guide; the scanner ships set to Normal mode.
Can it read driver's licenses for age or ID checks?
Partly. The DS4608-SR reads PDF417, the barcode on U.S. driver's licenses, but it outputs the raw data string; your software has to sort it into fields. Built-in license parsing is only available on Zebra's DL and HL models.
How do I add Enter or Tab after each scan?
Scan "Add Enter Key (Carriage Return/Line Feed)" in the DS4608 Product Reference Guide to send Enter after each barcode. For Tab or other characters, use the guide's Prefix/Suffix settings, or build the setup in Zebra's free 123Scan software and scan the configuration barcode it generates.
Can I use it in a warehouse, cold room or outdoors?
It's built for indoor counters and workstations. It's rated to operate from 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C), is IP52 sealed and survives multiple 6 ft drops, but it isn't intended for freezers or wet conditions.
Can I use the DS4608-SR hands-free in a lab?
Yes. This kit (DS4608-SR7U2100SGW) includes Zebra's Intellistand stand, which lets you switch between handheld and hands-free scanning, so lab staff can present samples without picking up the scanner.
Is the standard-range model right for very small barcodes?
For typical labels, yes. Zebra lists UPC (13 mil) up to 28 in and 10 mil Data Matrix at 1.0–11.5 in. It also reads 3 mil Code 39, but only at 2.2–5.4 in, so very small, dense codes need to be held close.
