Why do my shipping labels print small on this 300 dpi printer?
ZPL places everything in printer dots, so a label designed for 203 dpi prints about one-third smaller on a 300 dpi printer. To fix it, add ^MUd,200,300 at the start of the label format, or send ^XA^MUd,200,300^XZ to the printer once; it then scales text, barcodes and positions by 1.5x. Embedded logo images may not scale and should be recreated at 300 dpi.
Can the ZT411 print direct thermal labels without a ribbon?
Yes. Zebra lists both thermal transfer and direct thermal printing for the ZT411. Load direct thermal labels with no ribbon, then set Print Method to Direct Thermal on the touchscreen, in the Windows driver, or with the ZPL command ^MTD. Check your label software too: if it is set to thermal transfer, it can switch the printer back and cause ribbon errors.
Which ribbon should I buy for the ZT411: wax, wax/resin, or resin?
It depends on your label material. Zebra recommends wax for paper labels with little exposure to chemicals or rubbing, wax/resin for top-coated paper and matte synthetic labels with moderate exposure, and resin for synthetic labels facing harsh chemicals, high heat or outdoor use. The ZT411 takes ribbon 2.00–4.33 in wide on a 1 in core, up to 1,476 ft (450 m) long; use ribbon at least as wide as your labels.
Does the ZT411 use ink-side-out or ink-side-in ribbon?
Ink-side-out as standard; ink-side-in ribbon needs Zebra's optional ink-side-in ribbon spindle. To check a roll, press the sticky side of a label against the outside of the ribbon. If ink comes off onto the label, the coating is on the outside and the ribbon will work. Ribbon bought for another printer may be wound the other way, so test before buying in bulk.
Why is the ribbon wrinkling on my ZT411?
Common causes Zebra lists: the ribbon isn't loaded as shown on the diagram inside the printer, darkness or printhead pressure is too high or uneven, labels drift because the media guide isn't set, or the ribbon doesn't suit the label. Reload by the diagram, lower darkness to the lowest setting that still prints well, balance the head pressure and adjust the media guide.
My ZT411 skips labels or prints across the gap. How do I fix it?
This usually means the printer needs calibrating or has the wrong media type set. After changing label size or stock, run a manual media and ribbon calibration from the Sensors menu, and set the media type to match your labels: gap/notch, black mark or continuous. When set to continuous, the printer won't track where each label starts. Also check the sensor sits over the gap.
I'm upgrading from an older Zebra printer. Will my label formats and supplies work?
ZPL formats generally will; Zebra designs ZPL II to stay compatible with existing Zebra systems. EPL is the exception: Zebra supports it only on 203 dpi models, so this 300 dpi ZT411 won't run EPL. Labels and ribbon work if they fit the ZT411's limits: labels 1.00–4.50 in wide on up to 8 in rolls with a 3 in core, and ink-side-out ribbon on a 1 in core.
How often should I clean the printhead, and can I replace it myself?
Zebra recommends cleaning the printhead with solvent after every roll of ribbon in thermal transfer mode, or every roll of labels in direct thermal mode. The printhead and platen roller can be replaced without tools, and the printer reports when individual heating elements stop working.
