Do I need to install a driver?

Usually not. The DS3608-HD comes set to USB HID Keyboard mode, so any computer that accepts a standard USB keyboard treats it as a keyboard and it types scanned data into the active field. You can switch to other USB modes (virtual COM/CDC, SNAPI, IBM) for specialized software; USB CDC mode needs Zebra's USB CDC driver installed first.

How do I make it press Enter or Tab after each scan?

By default it sends only the barcode data. For Enter, scan "Add Enter Key (Carriage Return/Line Feed)" in the DS36X8 Product Reference Guide. For Tab, set Suffix 1 to Tab and set Scan Data Transmission Format to . You can also build the setting in Zebra's free 123Scan software and scan the configuration barcode it creates.

Will it work in a freezer?

Yes. The corded DS3608-HD is rated to operate from -22°F to 122°F (-30°C to 50°C), is IP65/IP68 sealed, and is rated for multiple 8 ft drops to concrete even at -30°C. Moving between the freezer and warm areas can cause condensation on the scan window.

Can it scan barcodes on a phone or computer screen?

Yes. Zebra states the DS3600-HD reads codes displayed on a screen as well as printed ones. If a phone screen is slow to read, scan an "Enhanced" Mobile Phone/Display Mode barcode in the Product Reference Guide.

How tough is it?

Very. The DS3608-HD is IP65/IP68 sealed, so it is dust-tight and handles water jets and submersion. Zebra rates it for multiple 10 ft drops to concrete at room temperature and 7,500 tumbles from 3.3 ft.

Can I connect the corded DS3608-HD to a PLC?

Yes. Zebra's EA3600 Network Connect (sold separately) connects 3600 Series scanners, including the DS3608, to industrial Ethernet. Pick the EtherNet/IP version (EA3600-R1) for Rockwell PLCs or the PROFINET version (EA3600-S1) for Siemens PLCs.

Can it read the tiny barcodes on circuit boards and electronic parts?

Yes, for small printed codes. The HD model reads 3 mil Code 128 at 2.0–3.0 in and 5 mil PDF417 at 2.0–6.0 in, so you scan close up. It isn't designed for direct part marks, such as dot-peened or laser-etched codes on metal.

Can I use it hands-free?

Yes, but this kit doesn't include a stand. Set the DS3608 in Zebra's Intellistand (sold separately) and a built-in sensor puts it into hands-free mode, reading any barcode presented to it without a trigger pull. Lift it out of the stand and it returns to trigger mode automatically.
