Why do my shipping labels print small on this 300 dpi printer?
ZPL places everything in printer dots, so a label designed for 203 dpi prints about one-third smaller on a 300 dpi printer. To fix it, add ^MUd,200,300 at the start of the label format, or send ^XA^MUd,200,300^XZ to the printer once; it then scales text, barcodes and positions by 1.5x. Embedded logo images may not scale and should be recreated at 300 dpi.
Can the ZT231 print direct thermal labels too?
Yes. Zebra lists both direct thermal and thermal transfer for the ZT231. Don't load ribbon when using direct thermal labels. Set the print method to Direct Thermal on the touchscreen or in your driver, and check that your label software doesn't switch it back to thermal transfer.
What ribbon does the ZT231 take, and which side should the ink be on?
The ZT231 needs ribbon coated on the outside (ink-side-out), on a 1 in core, up to 1,476 ft (450 m) long. Use ribbon at least as wide as your labels to protect the printhead. Choose wax for paper labels, wax/resin for top-coated paper and matte synthetic labels, and resin for synthetic labels in harsh conditions.
Can the ZT231 replace my ZT230? Will my labels and ribbons still work?
Mostly yes. Zebra says the ZT231 replaces the ZT230, works with ZT230 label formats and settings, and uses the same label and ribbon combinations. Exceptions: options such as cutters, peelers and network cards can't be moved from the old printer, there is no parallel port, and EPL runs only on 203 dpi models, so this 300 dpi unit won't run EPL.
Why is my ZT231 skipping labels or feeding blanks?
Usually the printer needs calibrating or has the wrong media type set. Run a manual calibration after changing label size, material or supplier, and set the media type to match your labels: gap/notch, black mark or continuous. Both of the ZT231's label sensors are movable, so check the sensor sits where it can detect the gap or mark.
Why does my ZT231 wrinkle the ribbon or say "ribbon not detected"?
Zebra lists incorrect loading, darkness set too high, uneven printhead pressure, labels drifting off line, or a printhead or platen not installed correctly as causes of wrinkling. "Ribbon not detected" often means the printer was calibrated without ribbon loaded. Reload the ribbon, use the lowest darkness and pressure that still print well, and recalibrate with ribbon and labels in place.
How do I put the ZT231 on my network?
Install the Zebra driver, plug in an Ethernet cable and turn the printer on; it tries to get an IP address from your network automatically. You can see the address under Printer Info on the Home screen. If it shows 0.0.0.0, set a static IP. Wi-Fi isn't built in on this model; it's an optional 802.11ac card.
How do I look after the ZT231 printhead, and can I replace it myself?
Zebra recommends cleaning the printhead with solvent after every roll of ribbon in thermal transfer mode. Use ribbon at least as wide as your labels, because uncovered parts of the printhead wear faster. The printhead and platen roller come out without tools, and the printer reports when individual heating elements stop working.
